"IT'S A MUST THAT I ADDRESS THIS"

Hello people,

It was a must that I addressed this issue on my blog. Yesterday a friend told me to check out Concreteloop.com to look at Rihanna's new haircut. I believe the hairdo is a good look for Rihanna, but I also believe that she is one of few exceptions to the hairdo. After browsing through the site I came across Solange Knowles' new haircut as well. I will be totally honest, the first thing that came to mind was "WHAT THE HELL IS SOLANGE THINKING?" Instantly making a JUDGEMENT from her appearance. After I read her twitter comments concerning her new hair style (which you can read below) I began to realize exactly what she was thinking..."BE YOURSELF".

SOLANGE'S TWITTER COMMENTS: "listen. if. i. wanted. to. make. a. statement. i. would. have. twitpic’d. photo shoot. ect. i. was. simply. taking. my. son. to. school. stupid. paps. took. pic. ive. had. my. hair. cut. like. this. for. two. weeks. i. was. NOT. inspired. by anyone. but. my. self. i. have. done. this. twice. in. my. life. i. was 16. i was 18. did. not care about your opinion. then. dont. care. now. dont. need. your. attention. or. your. co-sign. dont. want. a. edge. up. or a perm. because. im not trying. to make this 'a style' or a statement. i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves. with. hair. this. phase. of. my. life. i. want to spend . the time. the energy. and the money. on something else. not in the hair salon. im. not. mad. at . all of you. that have made your opinions known. and have sent negative. energy. my way. i expected this of you. you. have. the right to have. an opinion. so. do. i."

That's the definition of REAL TALK. So often we are quick to judge someone (myself included at times) over the smallest things that really don't mean anything at the end of the day. I have a new found respect for Ms. Knowles and her way of thinking. It amazed me when she said she cut her hair like this before when she was 16 and 18 years old. The teenage years are extremely judgmental for young women, but especially for the younger sister of Ms. Beyonce Knowles. It takes courage for a person to truly be different and block out the negative opinions of others. Solange is representing the oh' so popular slang term "DO YOU" to the fullest and I applaud her for that.

As I was reading the article about Solange on my G1, I was also listening to "Black Maybe" from Common's Finding Forever album. The lyrics (talking- not rapping) at the end of the song just happened to relate to the article. Common quoted these words:
"When we talk about black maybe
We talk about situations
Of people of color and because you are that color
You endure obstacles and opposition
And not all the time from...from other nationalities
Sometimes it come from your own kind
Or maybe even your own mind
You get judged..you get laughed at..you get looked at wrong
You get sighted for not being strong
The struggle of just being you
The struggle of just being us..black maybe"

Oh the irony. The moral of this story is......."BE YOURSELF & DO YOU".
